Every Thursday You Can Drop-in to UofA Observatory for Astronomy Viewing

The Observatory will be hosting  public observing sessions on Thursdays from September 14 to December 7. For an up-to-date list of public observing sessions, view the "Observatory Events" list below. We will also be offering a small number of tours to schools, camps, and other education-oriented groups. To book a tour, visit the Field Trips link.

University of Alberta Public Astronomy Viewing Hours

Solar Observing - Thursdays

To take part in solar observing at University of Alberta on Thursdays, viewers can drop in between 12 pm to 1 pm. Visitors may drop in anytime during this hour. No tickets required. Admission is free of charge.

Night Sky Observing - Hours - Thursdays

For night sky observing, you can drop in for one hour in the evening. There is no cost for admission, and there are no tickets required for viewing. The hours vary through the fall season.

September: 8 pm to 9 pm
October: 8  pm to 9 pm
November: 7 pm to 8 pm
December: 7 pm to 8 pm

Here’s what you should know before visiting the University of Alberta Astronomy Viewing:

  • The Observatory will be closed when the temperature falls to -20 C or lower.

  • The Department of Physics Astronomical Observatory is located in CCIS 5-240 on the West end of the 5th floor of the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science on the main campus of the University of Alberta.
