Fire Cadet Program for Teens aged 14+ Opens for Registration this Month

Note: As we grow our team here at Edmonton.family, we’re going to be sharing more content for parents with teens, and older children. We’re still going to share activities, experiences and events for young children in Edmonton, but we’re hoping to share more resources for parents of teens, in Edmonton.

The Edmonton Fire Cadet Program is a program designed for teens aged 14-18, with an interest in a firefighting career, in Edmonton. The Program's mission is to enable cadets to better understand the firefighting career through an experience that balances both classroom and hands-on learning. Fire cadets have the opportunity to earn high school credits for their involvement with the program through career internships and work experience. Each Student can obtain a total of 6 high school credits for 2 semesters.  The program is designed to be a 1-year program (2 semesters). Fire Cadets will receive First Aid/CPR and have the opportunity to learn aspects of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Level 1 Certification.

What is the Edmonton Fire Cadet program? The Edmonton Fire Cadet program is an opportunity for high school students to learn about Edmonton Fire Rescue Services while developing the important life and leadership skills needed to become career firefighters with the City of Edmonton. Designed for teens between the ages of 14-18, students must be between 14-18 at the beginning of the program.

What is the Edmonton Fire Cadet program? The program creates an oppotunity for Fire Cadets to Receive CPR and First Aid certification, Fight real fires in controlled scenarios, Cut apart cars using vehicle extrication tools, Practice search and rescue techniques, Use rope rescue techniques to climb down a building and much more.

Through career internships and work experience, fire cadets have the opportunity to earn high school credits for their involvement in the program, and gain valuable experience they can use when school is finished.

Students will take part in a once-weekly program (Wednesday evening between 6:00pm - 9:30pm), community involvement, fundraising initiatives, career fairs, parades and other community events as part of the program.

What is the cost of the program? The cost of the program is $100/year, and is kept low through a sponsorship through ATCO. Funding support may be available through the program.

Fire Cadet program applications are now open and will be accepted until April 30, 2022. The Edmonton Fire Cadet program begins September 22, and applications are open now.
