Optimising your home’s storage potential
Having clutter and mess around the house can have a negative effect on your mental health. This can make it difficult to relax in your own space. Being clever with your storage can help to reduce clutter and have a huge effect on your home.
Before you invest in any storage options, assess any problem areas. For example, you may struggle to organise your kitchen. Next, have a good clearout. By getting rid of or donating any items you no longer need or use, you will free up space for the things you cherish.
Invest in storage solutions
Once you have a reasonable picture of what you will need to organise, now is the time to start purchasing storage solutions.
If you are looking to give your cupboards some order, then you could use a basket system to help. Baskets are great for grouping similar items together and keeping them from mixing and getting messy.
Bedrooms can be an area that needs help, especially when it is an awkward shape or depth. One solution would be to get some fitted wardrobes installed to maximise the storage space you can use. This will prevent any useless gaps or unused space and help keep things off the floor and cupboards.
Utilise vertical space
Many living rooms with chimneys have alcoves on either side and knowing how best to utilise them can be hard. You could install some shelves or wall-mounted storage units to allow you to keep things tidy. These can be a great place to store your books and prevent a bookcase from taking up precious space.
Bathrooms and kitchens are rooms where utilising vertical space can be particularly beneficial. With bathrooms, you could get an organiser that hangs on the back of the door.
Underbed Storage
Depending on the type of bed you own, the space underneath could be prime storage space. If you have a bed on a frame, you could get some wheeled boxes to slide in and out like drawers. These are perfect for storing seasonal clothes, shoes or even spare bedding.
Divan beds are great for storage with their built-in drawers. Again, you could use baskets or boxes to group things together and save you hunting for a specific item when you need it.
Kitchen Organisation
Kitchens can be a hub of mess – from stray container lids floating around, to multiple boxes of the same products.
Drawer dividers are perfect for keeping your cutlery tidy as well as any other drawers full of odd bits. Shelf organisers can also help with smaller items such as spices, baking ingredients and condiments.
If you have wall space you want to use, why not put up a magnetic strip to store your sharp knives on when they aren’t in use? Remember to keep them out of the reach of little hands, though.
