37 FREE Family-friendly Things to do in Edmonton this Month (June)

Summer sure feels like it’s here, with the arrival of the warmer weather. To gear up for the fun, we’re sharing fifty of the most fun things to do in Edmonton this month, for FREE.

Free Things to do in Edmonton this month:

  1. Get out and try Geocaching
    Our kids are currently (and have always been) obssessed with the idea of the treasure hunt that comes with geocaching. You can download the app (use this guide to get started) and try the free caches to see if you’re into the adventure. If you are then you can choose the premium app, but you don’t have to - there are just more caches avaialable with it.

  2. Catch an Edmonton Oilers Playoff Game at Ice District
    The hype is real during the playoff season here in Edmonton and you’ve got to experience the energy at Ice District to catch a game outdoors, at least once with the kid. Splurge for a cheap seats alternative and check out one of the watch party experiences at Rogers place - tickets are only $5.

  3. Free Recreational Swim at Kinsmen Leisure Centre (June 1)
    Celebrate early out day with a free swim at Kinsmen Leisure centre in the afternoon with the kids. There’s a water slide, making it a favourite for the older kids!

  4. Superheroes, characters and Face Painting at West Edmonton Mall
    Visit WEM June 2nd to 5th for roving characters and face painting, throughout the mall. There are specific times daily when characters and face painting are available, and you can find those, right here.

  5. Tube Down Discovery Canyon
    Road trip season is here and this one is close to home. Discovery Canyon, near Red Deer, opens for the season on June 1st, making it a great day trip for a weekend adventure to tube down the kid-friendly course. You can rent a tube for $5, but if you bring your own, it’s free!

  6. Discover Elk Island Park
    Free with a parks pass, explore the trails at Elk Island National Park this summer.

  7. Visit Downtown Spark (Until June 5)
    Visit Downtown Spark and spot the monsters that tare coming out of the buildings downtown, swing on the Urban Jungle Gym, or splash through the tiny splash park at Alex Decouteau Park while you enjoy free entertainment and performers, street parties and more. Pack a picnic from home, and this is a cheap way to be entertained.

  8. The Return of the Sheep Festival in Fort Saskatchewan
    Summer is officially baaack with our beloved, turf-trimming sheep! Grab the fam, join us at Legacy Park, and celebrate summer with local food, entertainment, community lead activities and of course, sheep!

    The sheep will make their entrance at 12pm as they parade their way from the River Valley to their summer home in Peter T. Ream Historic Park.

  9. Family Fun Day in Glastonbury Park (June 4)
    This one is ffre for community members, but it’s still very low cost for everyone else at $10/family. The event runs from noon to 3 pm and will include face painting, glitter tattoos, bouncy castles, a climbing wall, zipline course, games and music. Plus join the Edmonton Public Library for reading fun, have the chance to tour a real police car, and bring a picnic or enjoy the food trucks.

  10. Experience Art and Design at the Works Arts and Design Festival (June 8-17)
    The Works Art & Design Festival is the most unique, free event of its kind. It attracts artists, designers and patrons from around the world – boosting the city’s energy and imagination for 13 days each summer.

  11. Check out the Rocketship Playground

    Blast off at the Rocketship playground and find a new place to play. With plenty of green space around, and an incredible rocketship theme through the entire playground, it’s a fun afternoon out! Find this one at 122 St & 112 Ave.

  12. FREE Recreational Swim with Inflatables at Emerald Hills Leisure Centre (June 11)
    Free recreational swim is back for June 11th to celebrate making it half way through the month until the end of the school year. There is a smaller scale inflatable in the pool, sized for younger children, and it’s the best warm pool in the city. There is no costs for admission for this event.

  13. Free Breakfast on a Dairy Farm (June 18)
    On Saturday, June 18, 2022, visit El Shaddai Dairy between 8 am and 12 pm for this FREE family fun event! You’ll learn about the El Shaddai Dairy and the dairy cows that call it home. There will be face painting, balloon art and even bouncy toys cows to play on, plus the Alberta Milk Moobile Trailer will be on hand!

  14. Martin Deerline Day of Play (June 18)
    Day of Play features free family fun at Martin Deerline's Day of Play! Children can learn while they play about life on the farm with hands on bean planting, pretend cow milking, tractor wagon rides, crafts and much more! How much does a round bale weigh? Do you know what a combine does? Come complete the roadmap to becoming a farmer for the day!

  15. Edmonton Dragonboat Open House (June 18)
    At this fesstival, you can learn about the sport of dragon boat and go for a paddle down the North Saskatchewan River! Tour the clubhouse, explore Dawson Park and enjoy an afternoon of fun for all ages.

  16. Cool off at the Spray Park

  17. FREE: Up on the Square Festival (June 18)
    On June 18, 2022, 12-8 pm, join the Edmonton Arts Council for UP on the Square, a summer celebration in Churchill Square! This free, family-friendly event will feature live music and performances, SNAP print demonstrations, food trucks, and activities for kids. This is the perfect event to kick off the summer festival season!  

  18. Get Free Admission to Art Gallery of Alberta (June 30)
    On the last Thursday of the month, get free admission to Art Gallery of Alberta and check out the new displays and galleries. There is no cost for admission for three hours in the evening, as part of this event.
