Do This: From Warhol to Banksy at Art Gallery of Alberta
There’s a brand new pop art exhibit at Art Gallery of Alberta and you can explore the From Warhol to Banksy until October 15, 2023. It’s a wonderful way to introduce your children to pop-art, with an impressive collection of Banksy and Warhol pieces, at a local gallery, on lend from Kelowna.
Pop Art is known for its commentary on consumerism, social consciousness, and, more recently, activism - is not just a phenomenon of the 1960s. The evolution of Pop Art, from Andy Warhol’s infamous Marilyn Monroe screen prints to Banksy’s guerilla street art, has completely blurred the lines between high and low art. Through a selection of prints, paintings, sculpture, and ephemera, visitors will see first-hand how Pop Art continues to critique our world and challenges us to think about the issues that persist in our everyday life.
Know Before You Go: From Warhol to Banksy
At the exhibit, you’ll learn more about Dismaland (one of our favourite parts of the exhibit). We loved the memorabilia and even the balloon, from the Banksy exhibit.
We love the idea of learning more about pop art, trying to create pop art at home and learning more about the artists in the exhibit: Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, Takashi Murakami, Banksy, and Mr. Brainwash.
Don’t skip the multimedia presentation on the big screen where you’ll find an assortment of clips about Banksy’s work - we loved this!
Build on the experience and consider trying a new skill, like screen printing or creating a stencil project, like a Banksy piece.
Visit the gallery for free on the last Thursday of the month, but children are always free to visit the gallery.
