There’s a Massive, 7-meter Earth Coming to Muttart Conservatory this Month
There’s a massive, seven-meter earth installation coming to Muttart Conservatory this month. The installation by artist Luke Jerram, is going to be part of the new feature pyramid, opening on January 14, 2023.
Here’s what you should know before you go:
With these types of installations (remember the giant moon?) You can have two completely different experiences, depending on whether you visit during the night, or day. For that reason, we suggest visiting near dusk or sunset, to experience the installation during the daylight hours, and circling back to the feature pyramid after dark, to experience it when the sun goes down.
The feature pyramid opens on January 14th, and will be available through all regular programming. If you haven’t yet had the chance to check out one of the drop in programs for the younger crowd, now would be a great time.
We like to couple a visit to the Muttart Conservatory with an outdoor activity in the area. You could pop over to Edmonton Ski Club, or visit the toboggan hill at Gallagher Hill for an indoor/outdoor experience with the kids.
Parking at the Muttart Conservatory is free of charge.
No food or drinks can be consumed in the pyramids, so pack a snack if you want to keep this trip budget friendly! You can enjoy it in the lobby after you’ve explored.
The artwork is 1.8 million times smaller than the real Earth with each centimetre of the internally lit sculpture describing 18km of the Earth’s surface.
You’ll be able to experience Gaia until February 26, 2023, at Muttart Conservatory.
You can visit the exhibit with the kids, or on one of the adult only nights at Muttart Conservatory, this month. Tickets do not need to be purchased in advance - making this a great activity for a winter day in Edmonton when it’s just too cold to spend a few hours outside!
