If skies are clear, on Monday, April 8, Albertans may be able to witness a partial solar eclipse. To help people safely witness the event, TELUS World of Science – Edmonton and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) - Edmonton Centre, will have safe telescope viewing at the RASC Observatory in Coronation Park for free. Safe solar viewers, available now, can also be purchased in the Galaxy Gift Shop at TELUS World of Science – Edmonton.
“Safely viewing a partial solar eclipse requires special solar filters,” says Frank Florian, Senior Manager, Planetarium & Space Sciences, TELUS World of Science – Edmonton. “It is not safe to watch a partial solar eclipse with your eyes alone. The event is also weather dependent and consequently the eclipse may not be visible if we have overcast skies. So, dress warmly for the event and let’s hope for clear skies!”
For those wishing to watch this partial solar eclipse safely through telescopes, the Science Centre and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (Edmonton Centre) will have telescopes set up around the TELUS World of Science – Edmonton’s RASC Observatory in Coronation Park from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
To learn all about eclipses, the Science Centre will also be playing the show Totality in the Zeidler Dome at 10:45 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on eclipse day. A Science Centre general admission ticket is required for the Zeidler Dome show.
