Registration is Open Now for École JH Picard Kindergarten French Immersion

So, you’re ready to send your child to Kindergarten. You’ve prepared them the best you can: you’ve taught them how to count, their ABCs, and maybe even how to write their name, and now you’re getting them ready for one of their greatest adventures. But have you thought about teaching them a second language?

JH Picard Catholic Elementary/Junior/Senior High School French Immersion Program

École J.H. Picard Catholic Elementary/Junior/Senior High School offers French Immersion programming from Kindergarten to Grade 12 all under one roof and is currently accepting registrations for Kindergarten for the 2022-2023 school year! The French Immersion Kindergarten programming is geared toward non-French-speaking families, so you don’t have to worry if you aren’t a native French speaker yourself.

Instruction is suitable for children with a wide variety of language experiences and diverse learning needs; inclusion is at the heart of what the school does. They value the partnership between home and school. The teachers address and teach the class in French but understand and speak English as needed, and communication with the home takes place in English.

Single Track Program for multi-age Learning

In the unique single-track program, J.H. Picard students – from Kindergarten to Grade 12 – are all invested in language learning. Although there are distinct areas for Elementary, Junior High, and High School students, the school leverages their multi-age context to generate opportunities for students to learn alongside each other by interacting and engaging in the school community. For example, students read, make projects , and play together during cultural events such as the winter carnival. Kindergarten students develop language skills both inside and outside the classroom as they relate with older students in cross-grade experiences, which build relationships, social justice, and student leadership.

The Kindergarten program is rich in oral language, literacy, numeracy, song and games, exploration, and discovery. The children connect to their learning environments through hands-on learning opportunities designed to stimulate curiosity and creativity. Learning takes place in a flexible and adaptable environment.

During instructional time, students engage in both guided and unstructured learning experiences. Small group and whole-class instruction are complemented by centres designed with the curriculum and specific learning needs in mind. Centres include dramatic play in the “kitchen,” building with ramps and balls, exploring shapes and patterns at the light table, and many more! The large schoolyard is an extension of the classroom.

It is not uncommon to see the children learning in the natural environment as well. The youngest learners develop confidence and independence in an immersive environment that brings language to the child, all while recognizing the benefits of play for children’s intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual development.

At J.H. Picard, they nurture the minds of the youngest students so that they develop a love of learning in a language-rich environment! Ultimately, the goal is for students to participate easily and willingly in conversations in French to become functionally fluent in French by the end of Grade twelve.
